Rabbit polyclonal to SLC11A1.SLC11A1 is a multi-pass membrane protein also known as Natural resistance-associatedmacrophage protein 1 (NRAMP1). It is a macrophage-specific divalent transition metal (iron andmanganese) transporter involved in iron metabolism and host resistance to certain pathogens. Itcontrols natural resistance to infection with intracellular parasites. Pathogen resistance involvessequestration of Fe2+ and Mn2+, cofactors of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic catalases and superoxidedismutases, not only to protect the macrophage against its own generation of reactive oxygen species,but to deny the cations to the pathogen for synthesis of its protective enzymes.
