Description

Heparin-binding protein (HBP), also known as azurocidin or cationic antimicrobial protein of 37 KDa (CAP37), is a neutrophil-derived granule protein. HBP is stored in two different granule subsets, azurophilic/primary granules and secretory vesicles. When the body is infected with bacteria or when chemokines, such as IL-8, are released, neutrophils are immediately activated and HBP is subsequently released. Therefore, during bacterial infections, HBP level will increase. As an inflammatory mediator, HBP can increase the permeability of vascular endothelial cells and thereby induce vascular leakage, neutrophil extravasation and edema formation. As a chemoattractant, it can activate inflammatory cells (monocytes and macrophages) and proinflammatory factors. HBP is an effective marker for monitoring sepsis development; when sepsis occurs few hours before hypotension or organ dysfunction, the level of HBP in the plasma significantly increases. In addition, HBP shows good prognostic characteristics in the detection of patients with severe sepsis.
